Corns and calluses are common, harmless conditions that can develop on the hands or feet. These skin growths are caused by a buildup of excess skin cells, usually as a result of pressure or friction on the skin. There are two types of these growths: Corns — a corn is a hard, raised bump on the surface of the skin; and Calluses — a callus is a thickened area of the skin which often has a rougher texture than normal skin. Corns and calluses often accompany one another, and they can sometimes be painful to touch or walk on.
With proper care and treatment, it's possible to prevent corns and calluses from developing in the future. At Calgary Foot Care Nurses, we will check other possible causes of thickened skin like warts or cysts to determine the best course of action. The doctor may request x-rays to make sure there isn't another underlying cause, like a physical abnormality that's causing your corn or callus. There are many treatments including trimming away excess skin until it goes away, medication for any infection in the area and specialty shoes or orthotic prescriptions to provide some much needed relief.
